Willie Nelson is dropping a new album this Friday , April 25th. “Oh What a Beautiful World” is Willie Nelson’s 77th studio album and showcases the work of singer and songwriter Rodney Crowell, who sings along with Nelson on the album’s title cut. The collection includes 12 songs, including Bob Seger’s hit “Shame on the Moon.” The 91-year-old artist is also on a nationwide tour and will be playing with Bob Dylan at the Hollywood Bowl on May 16th, as part of the “Outlaw Fest.”

A DEATH-ROW WALK INSIDE SAN QUENTIN FOLLOWED MERLE HAGGARD OUT OF PRISON — AND BECAME “SING ME BACK HOME.” The song did not begin in a studio. It began in prison. Merle Haggard was serving time in San Quentin when he knew an inmate called Jimmy “Rabbit” Kendrick. Rabbit once invited Merle into an escape plan, then reportedly told him he should stay behind because he had a future in music. Rabbit escaped, was later captured, and was eventually executed for killing a state trooper. Merle never forgot the walk. The guards. The hallway. The feeling of watching a man being taken toward the end of his life while music was still floating somewhere in memory. Years later, that image became “Sing Me Back Home,” one of the purest prison songs country music ever carried. It was not written by a man pretending to understand the condemned. It was written by a man who had stood close enough to see the shape of the silence. The track topped the country singles chart in 1968, but the chart number is not the reason it stayed. It stayed because Merle Haggard did not sing prison like a costume. He sang it like a door he almost never walked back through.

A TEENAGE BOY WAS HANDED LEFTY FRIZZELL’S GUITAR — AND BAKERSFIELD HEARD MERLE HAGGARD BEFORE NASHVILLE EVER KNEW HIS NAME. Before the hits. Before the rough face on album covers made people think Merle Haggard had been born already carrying trouble. He was still a teenager in Bakersfield when Lefty Frizzell came through Rainbow Gardens. To Merle, Lefty was not just a singer. He was the sound itself — loose, wounded, bending words until they felt half-spoken and half-confessed. Then Lefty did something no one in that room could have known how to measure. He brought the young Merle onstage and handed him his guitar. Not a compliment from a distance. Not a handshake after the show. The guitar. The instrument that had carried the voice Merle had studied like scripture. Merle sang. For a boy who had already known poverty, loss, and trouble, that moment mattered. Somebody from the world he dreamed of had placed the future directly into his hands. Years later, people would call Merle an outlaw, a poet, a Bakersfield giant. But before all that, there was a teenager standing under borrowed lights with Lefty Frizzell’s guitar against his chest — hearing, maybe for the first time, that the life he wanted was not completely impossible.

THE LAST SONG GLEN CAMPBELL EVER RECORDED HAD A TITLE THAT SOUNDED HEARTLESS — UNTIL YOU UNDERSTOOD THE DISEASE. “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” The words looked cold on paper. But Glen Campbell was not trying to hurt anyone. He was telling the truth from inside Alzheimer’s, the disease already taking pieces of him before the world was ready to let go. In 2011, Glen revealed his diagnosis publicly. Doctors could have told him to disappear quietly. Instead, he went back on the road for a farewell tour with his family close by, singing while memory itself was beginning to turn against him. Then came the final recording. In 2013, Glen and producer Julian Raymond wrote “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” for the documentary Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me. It became the last song he ever recorded. The cruel beauty of the title was the reversal: his wife would miss him, his children would miss him, country music would miss him — but Alzheimer’s meant Glen might not know what had been taken. The song later won a Grammy and reached the Academy Awards through another singer’s voice. Glen Campbell’s final goodbye was not written after he vanished. He sang it while he was still disappearing.

A $500 BOXCAR IN OILDALE BECAME THE FIRST HOME OF THE MAN WHO WOULD TEACH COUNTRY MUSIC HOW POVERTY SOUNDED. Before Merle Haggard had a prison number, a tour bus, or a Bakersfield sound, there was a boxcar. His father, James Haggard, bought it in 1935 for $500 and turned it into a home in Oildale, California. Not a metaphor. A real converted railroad boxcar, patched into family life with a dining area, a wash house, a concrete step, fruit trees, roses, and a grape arbor planted around it. Flossie Haggard once hosted Thanksgiving dinner for 22 people inside that small place. Merle was born there in 1937. That matters because his music never sounded like it came from a mansion looking back at poverty. It sounded like it came from someone who knew how thin a wall could be when bills, grief, and hunger were standing outside. In 2015, the boxcar home was moved to the Kern County Museum. Merle and his sister Lillian were there as the old rail car was lowered onto its new foundation. He said his parents would have been surprised to see what had happened to it. The house was not famous when he lived in it. The songs made people understand why it should have been.
