Willie Nelson is dropping a new album this Friday , April 25th. “Oh What a Beautiful World” is Willie Nelson’s 77th studio album and showcases the work of singer and songwriter Rodney Crowell, who sings along with Nelson on the album’s title cut. The collection includes 12 songs, including Bob Seger’s hit “Shame on the Moon.” The 91-year-old artist is also on a nationwide tour and will be playing with Bob Dylan at the Hollywood Bowl on May 16th, as part of the “Outlaw Fest.”

THE PUBLIC GOT “THE HAG.” THE PEOPLE ON THE BUS GOT A MUCH HARDER MAN TO READ. A long New Yorker portrait caught the version of Merle Haggard most people never saw. On the road, between shows, he could be quiet, guarded, and unpredictable, moving through that life with a tight inner circle that included aide Steve Van Stralen and close friend Dean Holloway. He was not always the blunt outlaw the public preferred to remember. He was more private than that, and often harder to figure out. From far away, Merle can look fixed in place — prison, songs, anger, stubbornness. Up close, the picture keeps shifting. The bus life in that portrait carries loyalty, tension, silence, and the strange closeness of people who spend too much time together without ever fully decoding one another. That may be the truest thing about Merle Haggard. The public got “The Hag.” The people on the bus got a much harder man to read.

In April 1993, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson stood side by side in Ames, Iowa, like it was just another night on a road that would keep going. No one called it a farewell. No one said goodbye. They sang “Highwayman” the way they always had — each voice stepping forward, then falling back, carrying lives that sounded too stubborn to end. When it was over, nothing announced itself. No long pause. No final gesture. They just walked off together, quiet and familiar, like tomorrow was already waiting. But it wasn’t. After that night, the four of them never shared a stage again. Waylon died in 2002. Johnny followed in 2003. Kris in 2024. Only Willie remains. That is what makes the moment cut so deep. Sometimes the last time does not arrive looking like the end. It just slips past you — and keeps its meaning until years later.

BEFORE THE LEGEND, JOHNNY CASH AND WAYLON JENNINGS WERE JUST TWO MEN IN A SMALL APARTMENT, BOTH FALLING APART QUIETLY. Before the outlaw image turned them into mythology, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings shared a small apartment in Madison, near Nashville. Johnny later said he did not need a roommate and could have lived somewhere better. He stayed because he thought living with Waylon would be more fun. Waylon remembered that season more darkly. He said both of them were deep into pills by then. They did not hand drugs to each other. They did not sit down and confess anything. Each man thought he was still hiding it from the other. Not the fame that came later. Not the outlaw mythology. Just two future giants in one small apartment, each carrying his own collapse, each believing it was still private, and neither one really fooling the other.
